Lately, we’ve been thinking back to some of our favorite weddings from the days when masks were limited to Halloween and guest lists of 200 or more were standard. One of our favorites from that long-ago time was Emily and Toby’s wedding at The Wharf Intercontinental in Washington, DC in November 2018.
The photographer for the day was Kir Tuben Photography, who we always love to see at weddings. She was friends with the couple, so it was a personal day for her as well.
If it wasn’t obvious by the fact that they chose Jordan as their Washington DC wedding DJ, this pair has excellent taste. Not only was the wedding day itself absolutely gorgeous, but their song choices were superb.
After a first look on the outdoor balcony looking over the Potomac, Emily and Toby said their vows in the venue’s Waterside Ballroom under a chuppah decorated with cherry blossoms. The bridal party’s entrance was to Peter Gabriel’s lovely version of Book of Love. Then Emily entered to Glaciers by Lights & Motion. If you’re not familiar, Lights & Motion is an instrumental rock band that makes cinematic, sweeping music. It’s perfect for big moments like wedding entrances! Even with no lyrics, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
The ceremony also featured a personal performance. Toby’s mom played the guitar and sang to the couple as part of the program. As music fanatics, we love when there’s a personal, live music element to a wedding ceremony.
After the vows, we got everyone into a dancing mood with Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder for the recessional.
During the cocktail hour in the hotel’s Potomac Hall, the couple let their DC wedding DJ take the reigns. They asked for Rat Pack-style music to keep the vibe classy, but the specifics were all up to Jordan.
Emily and Toby added uplighting to their DJ services at their Washington DC wedding. So Jordan washed the reception ballroom in neutral orange and white light. This kept the vibe relaxed during their first dance to Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison — another excellent choice!
When it was time to open up the dance floor, this crowd really let loose. With tunes like 1999 by Prince and You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates on the must-play list, Jordan kept the dance floor moving. He switched up the lighting too, adding vibrant purples and greens to build a party vibe.
At one point, Emily was a little concerned that the crowd was dancing too much, and were going to wear out before the night was over. But Jordan paid close attention. He switched things up with a slow jam right when the guests needed a break, and let them take a breather.
For the last dance of the night, Emily and Toby chose that most beloved of bar closers, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond.
After the event, Emily wrote some incredibly kind words about the DJ at her Washington DC wedding.
“Jordan and the Maryland’s DJ team delivered the dance party of the century! Our friends are still talking about how much fun they had at our wedding a few weeks ago! Not only did Jordan know exactly what we wanted, what to play and when, and how to mix songs, but he did the music for our entire event — from pre-ceremony, ceremony, and cocktail hour, all the way through the reception dance floor that lasted over 3 hours! ...The entire experience with Jordan was amazing from start to finish. He asked a lot of questions, gave us a lot of information, and helped us curate an amazing party for our family and friends. Our only regret was that we can’t do it every weekend — we even jokingly talked about annulling the marriage just so we would have to do it all over again. We decided that was too drastic, but we will definitely figure out an excuse to hire Jordan again… and you should too! You won’t regret it :)”

After a few hours of dancing I started getting nervous that people were going to get worn out, but Jordan knew exactly what to do — he threw on a slow jam, which got people up to dance with their date, and then they were refreshed and stayed on the dance floor for the rest of the night!
