From the lively streets of Baltimore County to the sophisticated beats of EDM, DJ Neil has carved out a unique niche in the music industry. Growing up in the Pikesville area and attending Pikesville High, Neil's journey from a local high school student to a prominent DJ and music producer is nothing short of extraordinary.

Neil's passion for international tourism, food, and beverage took him to Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, NY. There, he dove deep into his interests, conducting an independent study on nightlife in Las Vegas. His academic experience wasn't limited to just the books; Neil’s work in hospitality management led him to some fascinating locations, including Sonoma and Napa Valley in California and a short stint in Wicklow County, Ireland.

Upon returning to Baltimore, Neil worked at several restaurants in Fells Point, but his ambition didn’t stop there. Seeking further growth, he pursued an MBA and landed a role at T. Rowe Price through a friend's referral. Starting in customer service, Neil climbed the ranks to become a Project Manager and facilitator for Training and Leadership Development in HR.

The Musical Journey Begins

Neil's musical journey began about ten years ago. Initially a musician and music producer, he transitioned into EDM and dance music, recognizing that DJing would be the perfect way to showcase his growing passion for the genre. He formalized his skills at Scratch Academy in Philadelphia and quickly made a name for himself in Baltimore’s music scene. From playing at upscale restaurants and niche private events, Neil's talents eventually led him to the vibrant world of nightlife and larger private events.

For Neil, becoming a DJ was a natural progression that combined his strengths and passions. The blend of hospitality, project management, and marketing came together seamlessly in his DJ career. His musical education spans various prestigious institutions including Peabody Prep Conservatory, Scratch Academy, Garnish School of Music Production, Toolroom Academy online, and 343 Labs in Berlin. Neil also jokes about his unconventional learning at “Ball so Hard University,” highlighting his hands-on approach to mastering the craft.

Neil believes that great DJs are defined by their ability to read and shape the energy of a room while maintaining a strong presence. It’s not just about technical skills, although blending is a favorite of his. It’s about putting the crowd first, connecting with them, and making each event memorable through a tailored experience.

Wedding Magic and Memorable Moments

One of Neil’s favorite aspects of his job is the joy of seeing a packed dance floor at weddings, where people from all generations come together to celebrate. His most unique processional song? A Hobbit-themed piece at Cloisters Castle, and a touching violin version of Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick stands out as a personal favorite.

Though he acknowledges that some wedding songs are overplayed—he’d prefer to skip the Black Eyed Peas—Neil’s approach ensures that every event feels special and unique.

When he’s not working, Neil indulges in a wide range of musical tastes, from ambient and classical to melodic house music. Nostalgic binges into 80s and 90s hits also make their way into his playlist. Outside of music, Neil enjoys snowboarding, tennis, cooking, global travel, and is currently exploring surfing. His active lifestyle and love for sports complement his dynamic career perfectly.

For those eager to experience Neil’s musical creations, his work as Neil Nines is available on streaming platforms. Whether it's through his DJ sets or his music production, DJ Neil is a force of energy and creativity that continues to captivate and inspire.
