Meet DJ Scott, a multi-talented individual whose journey from architecture student to wedding DJ is as fascinating as it is unique.
DJ Scott’s roots run deep in Baltimore, where he first explored his creative passions through architecture and interior design. Although his academic background is rich in structural aesthetics, Scott’s heart has always beat to a different rhythm—music. Growing up with a lifelong passion for melodies and harmonies, Scott’s musical journey began at a young age and has evolved into a dynamic career.
A Decade of DJing
Scott’s DJ career spans 12 years, a journey that began with an unexpected twist. “I was always a musician, and when a close friend, who was a full-time DJ, needed assistance, I stepped in. I learned the ropes of wedding DJing from him, and when he exited the business, I naturally took the reins,” Scott shares.
Becoming a DJ wasn’t a random choice for Scott; it was a seamless transition from his life in music. For him, DJing serves as another creative outlet, complementing his band performances and fulfilling his love for music in a different way.
When it comes to his musical education, Scott proudly states that he is 100% self-taught. His expertise isn’t bound by formal training but rather by his extensive experience and passion for music. This self-taught journey reflects his deep-rooted dedication to his craft and his belief in the power of hands-on learning.
What Makes a Great DJ?
Scott’s philosophy on DJing is centered around the guest experience. “A great DJ,” he explains, “is someone who excels in communication, keeps the night flowing smoothly, and reads the room to select the right tracks.” His goal is to ensure that the event is memorable for the guests, even if it means flying under the radar himself. For Scott, it’s all about creating an unforgettable experience for the couple and their loved ones.
One of Scott’s favorite aspects of weddings is the opportunity to bring joy to someone’s special day. It’s not just about playing music; it’s about enhancing the celebration and ensuring everyone has a fantastic time.
As for memorable moments, Scott recalls one of the most unique processional songs he’s ever played: Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” It’s a testament to his versatility and willingness to embrace unconventional choices to make a wedding truly stand out.
No DJ’s career is complete without addressing the classics—sometimes overplayed. For Scott, “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri takes the crown as the most overplayed wedding song. Despite its popularity, Scott remains committed to curating a setlist that stands out and resonates with each unique audience.
Beyond the DJ Booth
Outside of his professional life, Scott’s interests are diverse. His love for music extends to his personal listening habits, where he indulges in 80s new wave and post-punk. Artists like Depeche Mode, The Cure, and New Order frequently grace his playlist, reflecting his deep appreciation for the genres that shaped his musical identity.
When Scott isn’t spinning tracks or engaging in construction projects, you can find him immersed in his passion for baseball and football. His enthusiasm for these sports adds another layer to his vibrant and multifaceted life.
With a career built on musical expertise and a dedication to making every wedding unforgettable, Scott continues to bring joy and memorable moments to celebrations far and wide.
